EPONA
YOGA TEACHER FEATURE
This
newsletter we meet King Jo who has
brought Epona Yoga into Singapore.
King is a wonderful teacher who
brings centeredness and understanding to
everyone.

KJ’s
background is in education, with a
special interest in young children’s
learning and development. While
living in Dubai in the United Arab
Emirates and in Australia, she
chanced upon several neuro
development/education and sensory
integration programmes for young
children and has been involved with
such programmes since. She is a
certificated Epona Yoga® instructor.
‘You
have been
such a wonderful part of my child's
life and I can’t thank you enough
for your enthusiasm and dedication …
you have been an absolute asset …’
(Skye, business owner)
‘My
3yr old
has opened up so much and come into
her own. She has enjoyed all the
sessions. Your patience and
exuberance has helped her to become more
confident …’ (Elizabeth, mother of
3yo)
Next
Month we
will be meeting Meg Mann a community
health nurse in Perth who is
changing the lives of many children
and families.
So
what’s new
with children and yoga this week? |
MUSIC
This week I want to remind you of a
time when you where young and video
games and dvd's were something you
would see on the Jetson's.
Today I ask you to get your children
into the kitchen and make some
noise. Forget about the mess, forget
about having to wash the dishes
after. Just allow your self to create a
band with your family.
Remember the time when the wooden
spoon was your guitar or even your
drum stick.
Take the rice from the cupboard and
pour it into the tupperware
container and maraca away.
Film it and send it to the grand
parents. This fun activity not only
brings families together, it
stimulates creativity and breaks
from routine.
You would be amazed at how into it
you can get. Kids will want to
dress up and be rock stars. They may
even amaze you or you may amaze
yourself with some musical talent you
never realised you had.
Enjoy and Jive Away.

Breathing
for Children
Have
you ever
sat and watched a baby breathe.
Their breath is relaxed, rhythmic and
deep. At some point as a child we
lose that beautiful nourishing
breath.
Just
like for
adults the breath can be used to
decrease stress, anxiety, tiredness,
tantrums as well as having many more
benefits.
Our
brains
although only 2% of our body mass
does require about 20% of our oxygen
intake. The more efficiently our
body takes in oxygen the more
efficient we can grow.
Teaching
children different breathing
techniques can be fun and is very easy to
do.
For
instance
alternate nostril breathing is a
fantastic breath to balance the right
and left brain, promotes clear
thinking, calms our nervous system.
Here
is an
easy way to teach it to children. I
teach children as young as 3 and
although they may not do it exact it
brings awareness to the importance
of the breath.
Get
two
different coloured tissues. (e.g.
yellow and blue) Place one in each
hand.
Place
the
yellow one over the right nostril
blocking the air flow. Take a deep
breath in through the left nostril,
then place the blue tissue over the
left nostril blocking it closed,
hold for 1 second, take the yellow
tissue away from the right and
exhale.
Repeat
in
reverse. Keep the left nostril
blocked with the blue tissue. Breath in
through the right nostril then block
it with the yellow tissue, hold
for 1 sec, then move the blue tissue
away and exhale out the left
nostril.
This
completes
1 round of alternate nostril
breathing.
When
kids
first begin this can be quite funny,
make a game of it.
Have
fun and
breathe.

Yoga for Kids – Asana or Activity
Lion Pose and
Breathe
To release the buildup
of stale Carbon Dioxide in our system we can do Lions Breathe.
I did this Breathe to an
audience of 2000 adults while touring with Deepak Chopra here in
Australia. It is fun and just a little bit silly.
Kneeling with your back
straight and chest expanded. You are a proud Lion. Take your hands and
groom your beautiful maine.
Take a big breath in and
roar like a lion, really roar from the bottom of your tummy.
Fantastic job. Now this
time when you roar I want you to stick your tongue all the way out,
don't worry you wont get into trouble.
Big breathe in and roar
stick that tongue out all the way. As you do fold forward as if you
about to pounce.

Yoga
in Schools
There
has been much research
done on the benefits of yoga in schools. We
here at Epona Yoga offer
Yoga to children via the use of games, asanas
(poses), music, breath
and meditation. Yoga has been adopted by many
societies both in the
eastern and western world. Yoga means to join or
to yoke; yoga is the
union of mind body and spirit. Yoga is not a
religion it is a method
used by many to help them feel calmer; allow
their bodies flexibility
and strength. Yoga is non denominational and
also a person’s own
journey or experience. Everyone is able to practice
yoga as there is no competition;
we celebrate everyone’s
unique talents.
“I love yoga because when I leave I
am always taller” Sam 12
years old
“I like yoga because I can be me”
Jessica 9 years old
“Yoga is good because we get to
make up stories” Lucas 6
years old
