What is a Chakra ? Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning "wheel" or "disk" symbolising the intersection point where mind and body meet. Effectivly they are the spinning energy centres in the body. There are over 300 chakras in the human energy system however the 7 located down the central line of the body are normally focussed on. Lotus flowers are used to represent the Chakras. Lotus flowers are very sacred in India, symbolizing a path of development from primitive being to a full blossoming consciousness, mirroring the base chakra rooted in Earth, which evolves into the "thousand petaled lotus" at the crown of the head. Each chakra has a number of petals- Base - 4 petals, Sacral - 6 petals, Solar Plexas - 10 petals, Heart - 12 petals, Throat - 16 petals, Third Eye - 2 petals and Crown 1000 petals. These petals open and close depending on the state of consciousness within. |
